Perfume Sample Sizes: 2ml, 3ml, 5ml and 10ml Compared
Share
Perfume samples come in four common sizes: 2ml, 3ml, 5ml and 10ml. Pick 2ml or 3ml to test a scent you have never worn. Pick 5ml for a trip or a longer trial. Pick 10ml when you already like a scent and want weeks of wear without buying the bottle. This guide shows what each size gives you in sprays, wearings and use.
TL;DR
- A 3ml sample typically gives 30 to 45 sprays. The exact count depends on the atomizer.
- 2ml is for a first test. 3ml is for a proper trial. 5ml suits travel and rotation. 10ml suits scents you already know you like.
- Judge a scent over several days, not one wear.
- Spray counts are estimates. Sprayer type and fragrance thickness change the result.
- Decants let you try niche and designer scents without paying for a full bottle.

The four sample sizes at a glance
A millilitre (ml) is a unit of volume. A standard 100ml bottle holds 50 times more than a 2ml sample. Sample sizes are small by design. They cover testing, not long-term use.
The spray figures below are estimates. A common atomizer releases roughly 0.07ml per spray, which puts 1ml at about 14 sprays. Published figures for a 3ml vial sit at 30 to 45 sprays, so we show ranges. We assume two to three sprays per wear.
| Size | Approx. sprays | Approx. wears | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| 2ml | 20 to 30 | 7 to 12 | First test of an unknown scent |
| 3ml | 30 to 45 | 10 to 18 | A full week or two of trial |
| 5ml | 50 to 75 | 17 to 30 | Travel, rotation, longer trial |
| 10ml | 100 to 150 | 33 to 60 | Scents you already know you like |
Treat the table as a guide. Your own habits matter more than the average. Someone who wears one spray lasts twice as long as someone who wears four.
How many sprays are in a 3ml sample?
A 3ml sample usually gives between 30 and 45 sprays. At two to three sprays per day, that is about 10 to 18 days of wear.
Several things change this number:
- Sprayer quality. A fine mist sprayer often yields more total sprays than a coarse sprayer, because a coarse one releases more liquid per press.
- Liquid thickness. Thicker oils and some parfums leave the nozzle differently from light colognes.
- Dip tube length. The last few sprays can be hard to extract because the tube may not reach the bottom of the vial.
- Your technique. A full press gives more liquid than a half press.
The last point is practical. Tilt the vial near the end. This helps the tube reach the remaining liquid.
2ml: the first-test size
A 2ml sample holds roughly 20 to 30 sprays. That is about a week or more of wear.
Use it when:
- You have never smelled the scent on skin.
- You want to test several scents at the same time.
- You are building a short list before choosing one.
2ml is also the easiest size to carry. It fits a pocket or a small card holder. The limit is time. After a week, you may not know the scent well enough to decide. Our guide to testing perfume on skin or clothes with a 2ml decant explains how to get the most from a small vial.
2ml vs 3ml
The difference is one millilitre, or about 10 to 15 extra sprays. That adds roughly three to six wears.
Choose 2ml if you are comparing many scents and want to keep the spend low. Choose 3ml if you want to wear a scent in different settings, such as the office, a weekend and an evening out. Three extra wears often decide a close call.
3ml: the trial size
3ml is the middle option. It is large enough to wear a scent on several different days. It is small enough to stay inexpensive.
Sources that describe 3ml bottles say they are frequently used for fragrance sampling, market testing and subscription boxes. That fits what we see. It is a standard trial size.
3ml vs 5ml
5ml gives you about 50 to 75 sprays. That is nearly double the 3ml amount.
Choose 3ml when you are still deciding. Choose 5ml when you are fairly sure and want to confirm it across a few weeks. 5ml also works well when you want to wear the scent often, for example as a work fragrance, without committing to a bottle.
5ml: the travel and rotation size
A 5ml decant covers a short getaway if you rotate a couple of fragrances. At two to three sprays per day, it lasts about three to four weeks of daily wear.
It suits:
- A two-week trip with one day scent and one evening scent.
- A gym bag or desk drawer scent.
- A longer trial of a scent that changes a lot on skin.
2ml vs 5ml
The gap is large. 5ml holds two and a half times as much as 2ml.

Pick 2ml to screen. Pick 5ml to live with a scent. If you test five scents in 2ml and love one, a 5ml of that one is a sensible next step before a full bottle.
10ml: the almost-a-bottle size
A 10ml decant holds about 100 to 150 sprays. At two to three sprays a day, that is around two months of wear.
It makes sense when:
- You already know you love the scent.
- The full bottle is expensive, and you want to spread the cost.
- You want a travel-friendly copy of a scent you wear at home.
For a scent you will wear often, 10ml is the point where a decant starts to compete with a bottle on convenience. It does not compete on value per millilitre. A full bottle is cheaper per ml when you will finish it. A decant wins when you might not.
How many wears do you need before you decide?
One wear is not enough. Experts advise against judging a perfume on a single wear. A scent changes over time on skin. Temperature, humidity and your own skin chemistry all affect it.
A simple plan:
- Wear 1 and 2. Note the opening and the first hour.
- Wear 3 and 4. Try it on a different day and in different weather.
- Wear 5 and 6. Check the dry-down, the hours later phase that stays on skin.
- Wear 7 and later. Ask if you still enjoy it. Ask if people comment on it.
That plan needs six to seven wears. A 2ml sample barely covers it. A 3ml covers it with room to spare. For a fuller routine, read our five-step sample testing routine.
Why a sample beats a store test
Shop testing has limits. Scents mingle in the air, and shoppers often smell too many things in a row. Fragrance writer Trine Mork notes that a take-home sample lets you test on clean skin over several hours and see how it lasts and dries down.
In-store access is growing. Target now stocks curated sample sets and travel sprays from several brands, and Ulta Beauty stores offer similar sets. These help with mass-market discovery. Many niche houses still sell only online or through specialist boutiques. A decant is the practical way to try those. We compare both routes in online vs in-store samples.

Which size should you buy?
Use your goal, not the lowest price, to choose.
| Your goal | Size to buy |
|---|---|
| Screen many scents quickly | 2ml |
| Decide between two or three finalists | 3ml |
| Test a scent for a month, or travel | 5ml |
| Wear a favourite for a season | 10ml |
| Buy the bottle with confidence | Full bottle |
For students and anyone on a budget, a mix works well. Buy several 2ml or 3ml samples. Step up to 5ml or 10ml for the one winner. That keeps your risk low.
If you want to go deeper on mixing sizes, see how to build trial scent sets at home.
Strength and how much to spray
Sample size is only half of the planning. Strength matters too. An eau de parfum or parfum is stronger than an eau de toilette. Strong scents need fewer sprays, so a vial lasts longer. A light cologne may need four or five sprays to be noticed.
Start with two sprays. Add one only if the scent fades within a couple of hours. If you also use scented grooming products, the same logic applies to them. Strength is a matter of dilution, and an essential oil dilution guide shows how small amounts change the result.
Our view: why sample sizes work
We sell decants in 2ml, 3ml, 5ml and 10ml. We also sell full bottles. We built the range around one idea: you should know a scent before you pay for a bottle.
Our view is simple:
- A full bottle is a commitment. A sample is a test.
- Most buyers pick the wrong size at first. They buy too small and cannot finish the test. Or they buy too large and waste money on a scent they drop.
- A 3ml or 5ml is the right starting point for most people. It gives enough wears to be sure.
- Niche and designer scents are the best candidates for sampling. They cost more and divide opinion more.
We stand by the authenticity of every fragrance we sell. Our customers rate us Excellent on Trustpilot. We ship worldwide, with discounted and free shipping thresholds.

Mistakes to avoid when choosing a size
- Buying one big sample of an unknown scent. If you dislike it, you have a lot left over. Start small.
- Testing for one day. A scent can change on a different day.
- Testing several scents on the same day. Your nose tires. Test one scent per day on clean skin.
- Ignoring the season. A heavy amber may feel wrong in summer and right in winter. A 5ml lets you check in both.
- Storing samples badly. Keep vials out of heat and direct light. This helps the scent stay true.

FAQ
How many sprays are in 3ml of perfume?
A 3ml sample typically gives 30 to 45 sprays. The number depends on the sprayer, the thickness of the liquid and how hard you press. At two to three sprays per day, expect about two weeks.
Is 2ml or 5ml better?
It depends on the goal. 2ml is better for a first test and for comparing several scents. 5ml is better when you want a month of wear, or you are travelling. Many buyers use 2ml to screen and 5ml for the final choice.
Is 3ml enough to decide on a full bottle?
For most people, yes. 3ml gives roughly 10 to 18 wears, which covers different days and weather. If you are still unsure after that, move up to a 5ml before buying the bottle.
What is a decant?
A decant is fragrance transferred from the original bottle into a smaller spray vial. It lets you buy a small amount of a scent instead of the full size. It is the standard way to try niche fragrances.
