How Big Is a 5ml Perfume? Size, Sprays and Comparisons
Share
A 5ml perfume is very small. It holds about one teaspoon of liquid, or 0.17 US fluid ounces. The bottle is usually thumb-sized: about 2 inches tall and under an inch wide. It gives you roughly 40 to 75 sprays, enough for several full wears of one fragrance.
This guide shows the size in inches, millimetres and everyday objects. It also covers how 2ml, 3ml and 10ml compare, how many sprays each holds, and which size suits your purpose.
TL;DR
- 5ml equals about 0.17 US fl oz, or one teaspoon of liquid.
- A 5ml bottle is thumb-sized. Most measure about 2 inches (50 to 55 mm) tall and 0.5 to 0.9 inches wide.
- Expect about 40 to 75 sprays from 5ml, depending on the atomiser.
- A 2ml vial is slimmer and holds roughly 20 to 25 sprays. A 10ml holds about twice as many as a 5ml.
- 5ml is enough to test a fragrance across several wears before you buy a full bottle.

5ml in numbers
Start with the volume. 5 millilitres is 0.17 US fluid ounces. One US fluid ounce is approximately 29.57 ml, so 5ml is about one sixth of an ounce. A teaspoon is the closest kitchen measure.
The bottle is a different matter. Volume is fixed, but the container changes the dimensions. Here are figures from several makers.
| Source of measurement | Height | Width |
|---|---|---|
| Refillable glass spray bottle, lid on | 2 3/8 in (about 60 mm) | 5/8 in (about 16 mm) |
| Typical 5ml miniature | about 55 mm | about 15 mm |
| General range for 5ml containers | 1.5 to 2 in (3.8 to 5.1 cm) | 0.5 to 0.75 in (1.3 to 1.9 cm) |
The pattern is clear. A 5ml bottle sits between 4 and 6 cm tall and between 1.3 and 2 cm wide. Wider round bottles exist, but the slim cylinder is the common shape for sprays and decants.
What 5ml looks like in real life
Numbers on a page are hard to picture. These comparisons help.
- Your thumb. The bottle is about the length of the top two sections of an adult thumb.
- A lipstick bullet. It is shorter than most lipstick tubes and a similar width.
- A teaspoon. Pour out 5ml and it fills one level teaspoon.
- A AA battery. A AA is about 50 mm long. A 5ml spray vial is close to that length, though slightly thinner than the battery in some designs.
- A pocket. It disappears in a coin pocket, a pencil case or the small pocket of a handbag.
That last point is the reason people buy it. A 5ml decant is easy to carry and weighs very little. It will not take up room in a gym bag or carry-on.
2ml, 3ml, 5ml and 10ml side by side
The four sample sizes we sell are 2ml, 3ml, 5ml and 10ml. Each suits a different job.
What a 2ml sample looks like
A 2ml perfume sample is the smallest common size. It is slim, often shaped like a short glass tube with a snap-on spray cap. A typical 2ml spray sampler measures about 12 mm across and 45 to 50 mm tall. Other 2ml vial styles, such as screw-cap or dropper vials, are wider, at about 15 to 16 mm, and shorter, at about 32 to 36 mm.
So a 2ml spray vial can be nearly as tall as a 5ml bottle. It is thinner because it holds less. Height alone will not tell you the volume. Check the label.
The four sizes compared
| Size | US fl oz | Approximate sprays | Best use |
|---|---|---|---|
| 2ml | 0.07 | 20 to 25 | A first impression and a few wears |
| 3ml | 0.10 | 30 to 40 | Testing one scent across a week or two |
| 5ml | 0.17 | 40 to 75 | A proper trial in different weather and settings |
| 10ml | 0.34 | 80 to 150 | Daily wear for weeks, or travel |
The ounce figures come from the NIST conversion of 29.57 ml per fluid ounce. The spray counts for 3ml and 10ml are our arithmetic, using the per-spray range below. They are estimates, not guarantees. For more on the smallest size, read our guide to getting about 25 sprays from a 2ml sample.

How many sprays are in 5ml?
The usual answer is 50 to 75 sprays. Some sources give a slightly wider range of 40 to 75. The difference comes down to the sprayer.
A fine-mist atomiser delivers about 0.07 ml per spray. A heavier pump can deliver up to 0.12 ml. Divide 5ml by those two numbers:
- 5 ÷ 0.07 gives about 71 sprays.
- 5 ÷ 0.12 gives about 42 sprays.
That is where the 40 to 75 range comes from. If you want a single planning number, use 50.
What changes the count
Four things move the number up or down:
- Atomiser type. Fine mist gives more sprays. Wide, wet sprays give fewer.
- Concentration and thickness. Oil-rich or thicker liquids can spray differently from light eau de toilette.
- How hard you press. A full, firm press releases more liquid than a half press.
- Priming. The first spray or two on a new sampler may only clear air from the tube.
The same source lists the same factors: atomiser type, concentration and viscosity, and how fully the pump is pressed.

How long does 5ml last?
The answer depends on sprays per wear. One published estimate gives these durations for a 5ml decant:
| Sprays per day | Approximate days |
|---|---|
| 1 | 50 to 75 |
| 2 | 25 to 37 |
| 3 to 4 | 12 to 25 |
| 5 to 6 | 8 to 15 |
Most people wear a fragrance on some days and not others. If you rotate through several scents, 5ml of one fragrance can last two to three months.
Think in wears, not days. At 4 to 6 sprays per wear, 5ml gives roughly 8 to 15 wears. That is plenty to learn how a scent behaves on your skin. You can see the opening, the heart and the drydown more than once.

Is 5ml enough to decide on a full bottle?
Yes, for most buyers. One wear tells you very little. A fragrance can smell different on a hot day than on a cold one, at the office than on a night out. A 5ml decant lets you test it in several conditions.
Use this simple routine:
- Wear it alone first, on a day with no other scents around.
- Wear it on a different day in different weather.
- Try it at work or college, and again at an evening event.
- Note how long it lasts and how others react.
- Wait a week before you decide. If you still want it, buy the full bottle.
Our five-step sample testing routine covers this in more detail. If you are weighing 2ml against 5ml, remember that 2ml suits a first impression. Choose 5ml when the fragrance is expensive and you want to be sure.
Our view on 5ml
- We sell fragrance decants in 2ml, 3ml, 5ml and 10ml. We chose those sizes because each one answers a different question.
- 2ml answers: do I like the opening? 3ml answers: does it hold up over a few days? 5ml answers: would I wear this regularly? 10ml answers: can I live with it for a month or more?
- We think 5ml is the best size for a serious test. It is small enough to cost a fraction of a full bottle. It is large enough to wear the scent many times. Buying a luxury bottle on a single spray is a gamble. A 5ml decant removes most of that risk.
- Every fragrance we sell comes with our authenticity guarantee. Our customers rate us Excellent on Trustpilot. We ship worldwide, with discounted and free shipping thresholds.

Carrying 5ml: travel and shipping
A 5ml bottle is one of the easiest ways to carry fragrance. In the United States, the TSA’s 3-1-1 rule limits liquids in a carry-on to 3.4 oz (100 ml) per container. A 5ml or 10ml decant is far below that limit. Check the current rules on the TSA website before you fly.
Shipping perfume across borders is different. Fragrance is a flammable liquid in many carriers’ rules, and some services restrict it. If you plan to send samples abroad, read this guide to shipping perfumes internationally first.
Two habits protect a small bottle in a bag:
- Keep the cap on and store the vial upright.
- Use a small pouch or case so the glass does not knock against keys.
Which size should you buy?
Match the size to what you want to learn.
- Choose 2ml if you are curious about many fragrances and want to keep the cost low.
- Choose 3ml if you want a few wears without moving to 5ml.
- Choose 5ml if you are close to buying a full bottle, or if the price is high.
- Choose 10ml if you already know you like it and want to wear it for weeks.
Students and young buyers often start with several 2ml or 3ml samples. Enthusiasts and reviewers tend to prefer 5ml or 10ml, because they need enough liquid to test properly. Work professionals often keep a 5ml or 10ml in a bag or desk drawer.

FAQ
How big is a 5ml perfume bottle?
A 5ml perfume bottle is about 2 inches (50 to 60 mm) tall and 0.5 to 0.9 inches (13 to 22 mm) wide. It is about the size of your thumb. The liquid inside is one teaspoon, or 0.17 US fluid ounces.
How many sprays are in 5ml of perfume?
About 40 to 75 sprays, with 50 a good planning figure. The count depends on the atomiser, which delivers roughly 0.07 to 0.12 ml per spray. A fine-mist sprayer gives more sprays than a heavy pump.
How many sprays are in 3ml?
Expect roughly 25 to 43 sprays. This is our calculation from the 0.07 to 0.12 ml per-spray range, so treat it as an estimate. Fine-mist atomisers sit at the high end.
What does a 2ml sample look like?
It is a slim glass vial, often about 12 mm wide and 45 to 50 mm tall for spray types. Some screw-cap vials are wider and shorter. It holds about 20 to 25 sprays.
Is 5ml bigger than 2ml?
Yes. 5ml holds two and a half times as much liquid as 2ml. The bottles can look similar in height, because the 2ml vial is narrower. Always check the volume on the label.
